8 months of which were spent in rebel prisons.
He survived his release only one week, and died of
disease caused by starvation.

Downwards, to the tomb

From First Church Cemetery, Templeton, MA:

Great GOD! Is this our certain doom?
And are we still secure!
Still walking downwards to the tomb
And yet prepare no more.

All heaven unfolding

From Dwight Cemetery, Belchertown, MA:

Worlds shall not bribe me back to tread
Again life's dreary waste
To see my days again o'er spread
With all the gloomy past
My home henceforth is in the skies,
Earth, seas, and sun adieu.
All heaven unfolded to my eyes.
I've no regret for you.
